The chances of a bounce-back season from Stephen Weiss have taken a dip, as it appears the Red Wings’ forward will be a healthy scratch tonight in Detroit against the Bruins.
Weiss, of course, was signed to a five-year, $24.5 million deal in the summer of 2013, only to score just two goals in 26 games before sports hernia surgery ended his season in December.
But Weiss, 31, won’t be the only non-injured veteran watching the season opener from the press box. Dan Cleary, 35, is also expected to be scratched, while winger Andrej Nestrasi will make his NHL debut.
“What I’m going to do,” coach Mike Babcock said Monday, per the Detroit News, “is whoever has earned the right to play on opening day is going to play.”
