Dennis Wideman’s campaign isn’t off to a great start.

The Calgary blueliner -- and the club’s highest-paid player -- won’t play on Thursday night versus Edmonton after he had a tough go against Vancouver last night.

Wideman went minus-1 with no hits, shots or blocked shots in the 4-2 defeat, and got drilled late in the middle frame by Alex Burrows:

The 31-year-old rearguard didn’t miss any time following the collision, but was benched for approximately six minutes after getting caught on Zack Kassian’s second-period goal (you can see Wideman’s defensive “work” here):

Per the Calgary Sun, Wideman is listed as a healthy scratch for tonight’s affair. The decision is garnering quite a bit of attention given he’s in the third of a five-year, $26.25 million deal (with a $5.25M cap hit), but it’s probably worth mentioning Calgary also made David Jones, he of the $4 million annual cap hit, a healthy scratch against the Canucks.

The lesson, as always: Bob Hartley is not to be trifled with.

Others have mentioned he took hard hit last night, but #Flames coach Bob Hartley says D Dennis Wideman is healthy. So ... A healthy scratch.
