According to reports, Carolina Hurricanes winger Jeff Skinner has left the team’s preseason game this afternoon after taking an elbow to the head from Capitals defenseman Matt Niskanen.

Here’s a look at the play (h/t @Bryan_mac39):

The hit occurred in the first period. Niskanen was not penalized.

Skinner left the game and it has been reported he will not return due to an upper body injury.

Looked like Niskanen got Skinner with his elbow right in the head. No call. Skinner a bit wobbly getting up.

Sunday’s news is not good considering Skinner has a history of concussion problems.

It has been a brutal preseason for the Canes who lost their second line center Jordan Staal for 3-4 months in September after an awkward collision with Sabres defenseman Josh Gorges.

Sunday marks the final day of the NHL preseason schedule with the games getting going for real Oct. 8.
