If nothing else, Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin is showing signs of progress.

After missing the team’s entire preseason schedule, Malkin participated in his first training camp skate on Saturday, per the team’s website. It marked the second straight day that the star forward had worked out and he got up to three when he was back on the ice today.

The Penguins have never stated what exactly is bothering Malkin, but head coach Mike Johnston admitted that “it did progress longer than we thought.” He’s still day-to-day and it’s not clear when he’ll be able to play.

“The next progression would be for him to do a pre-practice skate and get into at least the first four drills of a practice,” Johnston told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. That wouldn’t happen until Tuesday at the earliest given that Pittsburgh has Monday off.

The Penguins will open their schedule on Thursday against Anaheim.
