The Jets defeated the Flames 4-1 in preseason action Saturday night, but the loss of defenseman Tobias Enstrom is Winnipeg’s top concern.

Enstrom was hit from behind by Calgary forward Mikael Backlund at 14:51 of the third period. The Jets’ defenseman appeared to go into the boards left shoulder first.

Sportsnet has the video here.

Backlund was assessed just a two minute minor for boarding.

But as the TSN broadcast suggests, Backlund could be hearing from new NHL Senior Vice President of Player Safety, Stephane Quintal.

“Its’ as of right now, positive,” said Jets’ coach Paul Maurice post-game of Enstrom’s health. “We’ll wait to see how he comes back tomorrow, the rehab part of it. But it’s positive right now. You never like to see that (hit), there’s no place for it.”

Maurice refrained from commenting further on the hit fearing a potential fine for comments regarding the hit or the resulting minor penalty.

Enstrom skated off on his own and did not return to the game.

Saturday was the preseason finale for both the Jets and Flames. Winnipeg opens the season Oct. 9 in Arizona.
