Flames’ Bennett sidelined, Backlund ready

Flames first round pick Sam Bennett will not be in the lineup Saturday night when Calgary visits the Winnipeg Jets.

It was revealed that Bennett suffered an upper body injury Sept. 26 during the Flames’ preseason game against the Vancouver Canucks and tried to play through it.

It’s the second injury Bennett has suffered during his short tenure in Flames colors. During the team’s rookie tournament the 18-year-old suffered a groin injury.

“We’re dealing with a young player that didn’t want to really say how much pain he had,” Flames coach Bob Hartley told the Calgary Sun’s Wes Gilbertson. “It shows his unbelievable character again. He was ready to go through the wall to make this hockey club. In a big way, it’s refreshing.”

Bennett is not with the team in Winnipeg.

However, Mikael Backlund, Mason Raymond and David Jones are with the Flames in Winnipeg and will play in the preseason finale.

Backlund has missed the entire preseason due to an abdominal injury. While Raymond (groin) and Jones (lower body) have been limited due to injuries.
