For the second straight year, the Blues have released Ryan Whitney from his training camp tryout.
Whitney, 31, was dropped from his PTO on Friday, the club announced. The former Penguin, Duck, Oiler and Panther caught on with the Blues for last year’s camp as well, but was sent home just 20 days after coming aboard.
Once considered a top offensive blue-liner, Whitney’s most productive season in the NHL came in 2007-08, when he had 59 points for the Penguins.
But a serious ankle injury suffered in 2010 affected his mobility. Late last year, he admitted “there’s certain things I can’t do now.”
Last year, Whitney went pointless in seven games for the Florida Panthers before he was waived. The 31-year-old spent most of the season with AHL San Antonio, scoring seven goals with 16 assists in 43 games.
