The Colorado Avalanche lost again last night -- 2-1 in a shootout to the Kings -- dropping their winless preseason record to 0-5-2.

But on the bright side, they got a strong performance from new backup goalie Reto Berra, who stopped 41 of the 42 Los Angeles shots he faced.

“He played really well,” Avs coach Patrick Roy said, per the Denver Post. “A lot of people had a question mark on him but I think he did exactly what he had to do to make make everybody comfortable and believe in him, and trust in him when [Semyon Varlamov] has to take a night off he’ll be able to give us some good hockey.”

Berra was acquired in a trade from Calgary in order to replace Jean-Sebastien Giguere, who registered a respectable .913 save percentage in 22 appearances last season, before retiring in the summer.

The Avs have scored just eight goals in seven preseason games. They finish their exhibition schedule Saturday in Las Vegas versus the Kings.
