Defenseman Aaron Rome’s bid to make the Detroit Red Wings’ roster was dealt a blow tonight when he suffered a lower-body injury while playing against the Toronto Maple Leafs. He will miss the remainder of the contest as a result, per MLive’s Ansar Khan.

Rome signed a three-year, $4.5 million contract with Dallas in the summer of 2012, but he was plagued by injuries throughout his tenure. Dallas bought him out in June after he recorded one assist in just 25 games last season.

The 31-year-old defenseman has 28 points and 185 penalty minutes in 226 career NHL games.

He faced an uphill battle to make Detroit to begin with as the Red Wings already have seven blueliners signed to one-way contracts. He’s also another left-handed shot while Red Wings coach Mike Babcock has been looking for the opposite.
