Habs blueliner Jarred Tinordi doesn’t have a disciplinary hearing scheduled for his big hit on Washington’s Nate Schmidt during Sunday’s preseason game, a NHL spokesman has confirmed.
Tinordi was given a five-minute elbowing major and game misconduct on the play, which occurred just 1:55 into the third period. He was also given a fighting major for throwing down with the Caps’ Chris Brown:
Following the game, Montreal jumped to Tinordi’s defense and insisted it wasn’t a dirty hit. From CTV:
P.K. Subban defended his fellow-blueliner in an interview after the game. “I don’t think he got his elbow up. He’s a big guy. He can throw his weight around. You can see his development as he starts to get more comfortable out there.”
Habs Max Pacioretty and Dale Weise also told reporters after the game that they thought that the hit was clean. Tinordi did not speak to reporters.
Coach Michel Therrien said afterwards that he thought Tinordi’s hit on Schmidt was not intentional. “Tinner just tried to finish hit hit. He’s 6'6" and he hit a smaller guy.”
Schmidt was held off ice for the majority of the final frame, but did return to take a final shift after passing concussion protocol, according to Caps head coach Barry Trotz.
