Leafs release Tallinder from PTO

Toronto released veteran blueliner Henrik Tallinder from his training camp tryout on Monday, just days after he suffered a separated shoulder in an exhibition campaign against Buffalo.

Tallinder, 36, was hurt on a hit from ex-Sabres teammate Mike Weber on Friday and hasn’t played since. The injury essentially ended his stint with the Leafs and may have capped his NHL career in the process -- with the regular season set to open on Oct. 8, it’s unclear if or when Tallinder would be ready to resume playing, and many teams have already whittled their rosters down to 30 players or fewer.

Buffalo’s second-round pick at the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, Tallinder has appeared in nearly 700 NHL contests -- most of them coming with the Sabres -- and has represented Sweden at a pair of Olympics, including the ’14 Winter Games in Sochi where he helped his country capture a silver medal.
