Whether Quick plays in preseason will ‘go right down to the wire’

Jonathan Quick was originally projected to spend 10-12 weeks recovering from his wrist surgery, but as it turns out he might need at least a bit longer than that, per the Los Angeles Times.

Kings GM Dean Lombardi said that whether or not Quick plays in the preseason at all will “go right down to the wire.” If that happens, it could make Quick sluggish for the start of the season and might even lead to backup Martin Jones playing between the pipes in the Kings’ opener. Lombardi isn’t too concerned though.

Jeff Deslauriers agreed to join the Kings’ camp on a tryout basis, so in the event that Quick isn’t ready for the regular season, he might end up serving temporarily as the team’s backup. One of Lombardi’s goals over the summer was to find a No. 3 goalie to serve as an insurance policy, but that proved to be a difficult task.

“Guys who come in as a three, generally want a chance as a two and they don’t see that [here],” Lombardi said.
