Update: HBO reps confirmed that they’re walking anyway from their involvement in the NHL “24/7" series in this e-mail (via Puck Daddy):

“Everybody at HBO enjoyed working with the NHL and its teams on ‘24/7’ the past four years. It was an exciting endeavor and we’re very proud of the never-before-seen presentation of the world of hockey that ‘24/7’ was able to capture,” said Ray Stallone, a spokesman for HBO.

“There was never an expectation that HBO would chronicle the lead-up to the Winter Classic every year. So we will not be involved with the NHL this season. We wish the NHL the very best and the door will always remain open.”

The news originally came from Greg Brady of FAN 590 radio:

Brady adds that the NHL could still work on some sort of behind-the-scenes show, but that “HBO has walked.”

The first 24/7 series leading up to the Winter Classic was in 2011, when the Capitals and Penguins were profiled. It was a production that received widespread praise, as well as confirming Bruce Boudreau as one of the great profanity aficionados of our time.

Two more editions followed, with the cameras following the Rangers and Flyers in 2012 and Maple Leafs and Red Wings in 2013.
