Washington has retained some defensive depth for the upcoming season, agreeing to terms with Cameron Schilling on a two-way deal.

Schilling, 25, has played just two games for the Caps over the last two years and made his NHL debut during the lockout-shortened ’13 campaign. He’s spent the majority of his time with AHL Hersey and has played quite a bit, appearing in 70 games in each of the last two seasons.

The former University of Miami (Ohio) product will be in tough to crack Washington’s blueline this season. After the additions of Brooks Orpik and Matt Niskanen, Schilling could find himself as low as 12th on the organizational depth chart -- he’ll be battling the likes of Connor Carrick, Nate Schmidt and Patrick Wey for call-ups to the big club.
