Report: Senators still looking for top-nine forward

The Ottawa Senators were decent offensively last season, but they’re in danger of sliding after accommodating former captain Jason Spezza’s trade request over the summer. They did sign David Legwand to a two-year, $6 million contract, but were otherwise pretty quiet on the free agent market.

At this point there isn’t much left, but the Senators would still like to add a top-nine forward, according to the Ottawa Sun. That desire might lead to them making a trade, but that would be difficult for Senators GM Bryan Murray to pull off this close to the start of training camp.

“Making a trade at this time of year is always tricky because teams are usually happy with what they’ve got,” a league executive told the Sun.

“Nobody has lost a game yet. They’ve spent the summer shaping their team and everybody is excited going into camp. Dealing is pretty difficult.”

Playing armchair GM for a minute, it’s worth noting that the Boston Bruins are in a difficult cap situation given that they’re close to the ceiling and still need to re-sign restricted free agents Reilly Smith and Torey Krug. That’s led to speculation that Boston might deal a player like forward Brad Marchand to address the situation.

As things currently stand, the Senators will be looking to their young forwards to step up. They at least have some promising candidates in Mika Zibanejad, Mark Stone, and one of the players they acquired in the Spezza deal, Alex Chiasson.
