The Carolina Hurricanes added some experience to their front office group on Wednesday, hiring former Dallas GM Joe Nieuwendyk to serve as a professional scout and advisor.
“Joe brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to our organization,” 'Canes GM Ron Francis said in a statement. “He will be based in Dallas, and will be a major asset to the Hurricanes in player evaluations.”
Nieuwendyk, 47, was relieved of his duties in Dallas over 16 months ago and has been on the sidelines since, though not entirely out of the loop. Earlier this year, a report from Sportsnet claimed that Brian Burke, Calgary’s newly-appointed director of hockey ops, was keen to bring Nieuwendyk aboard as Jay Feaster’s replacement as GM.
In this new advisory role, Nieuwendyk will return to the type of position he held in both Toronto and Florida prior to landing the Stars gig.
