Size matters: Ducks follow up Maroon signing by inking Ritchie

The Anaheim Ducks announced today that they have signed Nick Ritchie to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Taken with the 10th overall pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, Ritchie is a big forward at 6-foot-3, 236 pounds and he isn’t afraid to use his size to his advantage. The fact that the Ducks signed him and Maroon at roughly the same time is an example of how much they value strong, imposing players.

As Buffalo Sabres GM Tim Murray put it when discussing Ritchie and similar prospects prior to draft, teams are looking to emulate the defending champion Los Angeles Kings by employing good players that are also “heavy” and Ritchie matches that description.

He had 39 goals, 74 points, and 136 penalty minutes in 61 games with the OHL Peterborough Petes in 2013-14.
