Habs sign ’14 first-rounder Scherbak to entry-level deal

The Montreal Canadiens have agreed to terms with their first-round pick at the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, Nikita Scherbak.

Scherbak, 18, inked his three-year entry-level pact following a solid campaign with WHL Saskatoon. He scored 78 points in 65 games for the Blades, finishing tops among all Western League rookies in goals (28) and assists (50).

A native of Moscow, Scherbak first played in the Russian junior league before moving to North America in ’13. He was taken 26th overall at the ’14 draft and was the first Russian-born player off the board and just one of two Russians taken in the opening round (the other was San Jose’s Nikolay Goldobin, taken one spot after Scherbak at No. 27.)

Scherbak recently participated in Montreal’s prospects camp, but is unlikely to crack the Habs’ roster this fall.
