The Flyers shored up their goaltending depth on the opening day of free agency, bringing back Ray Emery for another year as Steve Mason’s backup while bringing over former NHL draftee and German league netminder Robb Zepp.
Emery, 31, went 9-12-2 with a 2.96 GAA and .903 save percentage last season, his first in Philadelphia. The veteran then saw limited action in the team’s opening round playoff loss to the Rangers and took a bit of a haircut to return next year -- last season, Emery made $1.65 million and in 2014-15, he’ll make $1 million flat (as the Flyers are up against the salary cap ceiling.)
As for Zepp...he’s a 32-year-old journeyman that was drafted once in ’99 (by Atlanta) and again in ’01 (by Carolina). He’s spent the last seven years playing for Berlin of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga -- the top circuit in Germany -- and posted a 2.39 GAA last season with a .931 save percentage.
