The Calgary Flames have added some more toughness, signing defenseman/forward Deryk Engelland to a three-year, $8.7 million contract.
Yep, that’s right -- Engelland -- a guy coming off a three-year, $1.7 million contract -- will carry a $2.9 million cap hit for the next three years. The 32-year-old was apparently a hot commodity after scoring six goals and six assists for the Penguins in 56 games last season.
Of course, Engelland wasn’t signed for his scoring. The Flames haven’t been shy about their desire to get bigger and tougher, and new general manager Brad Treliving, along with president of hockey ops Brian Burke, are backing up their words with actions.
Remember that Calgary also added Brandon Bollig from Chicago at the draft, and the Flames already had Brian McGrattan under contract for next season.
Granted, UFA Kevin Westgarth probably won’t be back.
