The Phoenix Coyotes have the 12th overall pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. But when they make that selection, they’ll henceforth be known as the Arizona Coyotes.
That’s right -- the Coyotes -- who don’t actually play in Phoenix anyway; they play in Glendale -- will officially become Arizona’s team on June 27, when the draft takes place in Philadelphia.
The name change, which was no secret, is intended to “encourage more fans from all over the state” to support the team.
The New Jersey Devils, Minnesota Wild, Colorado Avalanche, Florida Panthers, and Carolina Hurricanes also represent states, not cities. (Do the New York Islanders as well? Uniondale is a suburb of New York City, so probably not. If we’re wrong about that, let us know. )
