Devils’ Urbom signs in KHL

Alexander Urbom

Alex Urbom is off to Russia.

The former Devil and Capital has agreed to join KHL club Severstal Cherepovets, the team announced on Friday. The move marks the end of a busy 2013-14 campaign in which the Swedish defenseman started with the Devils organization, got picked up on waivers by the Caps, played 20 games for Washington, got waived again... only to be picked up by the team that released him in the first place, New Jersey.

He then spent the remainder of the year in AHL Albany.

The 73rd overall pick at the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, Urbom scored 11 points in 35 games for Albany this year and scored a career-high 23 points in 72 games for the Baby Devils in 2010-11. He’s the second farmhand New Jersey has lost to Europe this offseason -- earlier, forward Harri Pesonen signed in Switzerland.
