For the first time in tournament history, the IIHF World Championships will be going to Denmark.

The IIHF announced on Friday that the Danes had been awarded the 2018 tournament -- to be held in the cities of Copenhagen and Herning -- beating out Latvia for the right to host the annual event.

Denmark has steadily become an emerging player on the international ice hockey scene. Last year, seven different Danish players suited up in the NHL -- Jannik Hansen, Mikkel Boedker, Lars Eller, Nicklas Jensen, Philip Larsen, Frans Nielsen and Peter Regin -- and the national team is currently ranked 13th in the world, sandwiched between France (which has stunned onlookers at the current Worlds in Belarus) and Slovenia (which stunned onlookers at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.)

As for the World Championships prior to ’18, the Czech Republic will host next year, followed by Russia in 2016. In 2017, the cities of Paris and Cologne will co-host the event.
