The Detroit Red Wings continue to add to their franchise record for most consecutive playoff appearances. The number is now up to 23.
The Red Wings, ravaged by injuries, including to some of their top players, for a good chunk of this season, clinched a spot in the 2014 Stanley Cup playoffs with a single point in a 4-3 shootout loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday.
Riley Sheahan scored for the Red Wings with 1:15 remaining in the third period to even it up at three goals apiece, and helping send this to overtime, securing that valuable single point.
“This is a big game for us. We might be playing them next week, so we want to do everything we can to play right and give ourselves a chance to win the game,” said defenseman Niklas Kronwall, as per The Detroit News.
#RedWings' Brendan Smith says streak was a bit of motivation. "You don't want to be that 23rd not to get it done."
