Tallon: Gudbranson is staying in Florida, likely to be captain one day

Gudbranson

Erik Gudbranson’s had an up-and-down season for the Panthers, briefly sitting as a healthy scratch while missing time with a broken orbital bone and, currently, a knee injury.

That said, don’t expect Gudbranson -- a pending RFA -- to hit the open market this summer.

“He’s not going anywhere,” Panthers GM Dale Tallon said, per Sportsnet. “He is likely going to be the captain of our team some day.”

Gudbranson, the third overall pick at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, is in the midst of his third season with Florida. There’s been a slight regression in his game since his rookie campaign -- when he made 72 appearances and played in all seven of Florida’s playoff games -- but there’s still plenty of potential for the 6-foot-5, 210-pound rearguard, who plays a very physical game and only turned 22 in January.

As such, there’s little surprise Tallon is already declaring that Gudbranson will stay put.
