Slovaks lose former Isles draftee Marcinko (leg) for Olympics

Slovakia suffered a blow on Thursday, learning that forward Tomas Marcinko would be lost for the remainder of the Olympic tournament with an injury against the U.S. in the tournament opener.

Marcinko, 25, injured his leg -- torn ligaments, according to IIHF.com -- in the second period of Wednesday’s 7-1 loss and is now in danger of missing the remainder of the season. He currently plays for HC Kosice of the Slovak Extraliga, but had spent four years in the Islanders organization after being taken in the fourth round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, spending all of his time with AHL Bridgeport.

The loss will hurt Slovakia on a number of fronts. Marcinko was a center and played nearly 10 minutes prior to getting hurt, suggesting he was part of the regular rotation. What’s more, Slovakia is unable to name a replacement player as the Olympic rosters were locked in at the start of the tournament.
