Carter scores Canada’s first natural hat trick at Olympics in 58 years

CarterGoal

Though he came into today as Canada’s 13th forward, Jeff Carter managed to put himself in the history books.

Carter scored a natural hat trick during the second period of Canada’s game against Austria, becoming the first Canadian to do so in Olympic competition since Paul Knox did it against Austria (oddly enough) at the 1956 Games in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.

Carter started his one-man scoring assault just 2:39 into the second, jumping out of the penalty box to force a turnover and bang home a rebound. He then proceeded to score at the 4:09 and 14:33 marks to finish the job, a feat made even more impressive by the fact he only had 5:27 ice time through two periods -- and had just five total shots on goal.

San Jose forward Patrick Marleau assisted on all three Carter goals, and Canada went into the second period holding a 6-0 lead.
