Before Monday’s game against the Los Angeles Kings, Patrick Kane learned that his grandfather Donald died. The Chicago Blackhawks star did his best to focus on the game at hand, but when he scored the first of two goals, he paid tribute to his grandfather with a skyward salute:

As CSNChicago.com’s Tracey Myers reports, the 25-year-old was emotional when discussing his grandfather’s impact on his life after the 5-3 win for Chicago.

“One of my great friends growing up. It’s just a really sad day,” Kane said. “He came to a lot of my hockey games. But he was more worried about my grades and me being a good kid.”
