NHL says Colorado ‘absolutely’ in mix for outdoor game; Citi Field too?

We’ve already discussed Dallas being in the early stages for a potential game at Cowboys Stadium, so let’s keep rolling.

First up? Denver. According to Advertising Age, the league’s connection with Colorado-based brewer Coors -- title sponsor of the Stadium Series -- could result in the Avalanche getting an outdoor event.

NHL CMO Brian Jennings confirmed the Colorado Avalanche are under consideration to host a Stadium Series game next year.

Mr. Dettman [Coors’ director of sports & entertainment marketing] said the brewer’s so pleased with its multi-year title sponsorship of the Series, its pushing for Denver to be in the rotation next year. And what do you know? The game could be played at Coors Field.

“It would be special no doubt,” said Mr. Dettman on Sunday, as the New York Rangers defeated the rival New Jersey Devils 7-3 in the first hockey game played at Yankee Stadium. “Again, the heritage of the brand, being from the Rocky Mountains, we’d welcome that.”

The NHL’s Mr. Jennings joked that Mr. Dettman brings up the topic at every meeting. The league is “absolutely” considering an outdoor Avalanche game next season. “It’s just a great marketplace and a deserving marketplace,” said Mr. Jennings.

Next up? New York. Yes, again. According to ESPN’s Katie Strang, there’s talk of going back to the Big Apple based partly on the success of the recently-completed two game series at Yankee Stadium. The wrinkle, though, would be a venue switch to the home of the Mets -- Citi Field.

A senior Mets source told ESPNNewYork.com that the team has had discussions with the league about the possibility in the future.

“We’re always talking with various entities about bringing big events to Citi Field,” the source said. “We did have discussions with the NHL and are always open to revisiting them down the road.”

With the success of the two Stadium Series games at Yankee Stadium recently, it’s hard to imagine the Mets wouldn’t want to bring an event of that magnitude to the Queens-based ballpark.

“We loved having the event and would welcome it back,” Yankees team president Randy Levine said.
