Flyers rally in third period to best Islanders

Philadelphia goaltender Steve Mason had a night he’d likely rather forget mere hours after inking an extension, but the Flyers still ended up with two points on Saturday.

The New York Islanders enjoyed an early 2-0 lead on the strength of goals from John Tavares and Cal Clutterbuck. They also stunted the Flyers first comeback attempt by netting two markers in less than three minutes in the second period to put the Islanders back on top 4-3.

That was the score going into the second intermission, but Philadelphia was still not deterred. Jakub Voracek netted his fourth goal in five games and rookie Michael Raffl scored the first game-winner of his career.

Matt Read collected the empty netter to complete Philadelphia’s 6-4 win.

With the Rangers beating the Ottawa Senators earlier in the day, this victory preserved Philadelphia’s two-point edge in the battle for second place in the Metropolitan Division. Meanwhile, the Islanders have now lost two of their last three contests following their 7-1-0 run.
