Phoenix Coyotes defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson left Thursday’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first period and will not return with an upper-body injury.

That’s according to Sarah McLellan of azcentral sports, who reported via Twitter that Ekman-Larsson was hit into the boards from behind by Blue Jackets’ forward Derek MacKenzie in the first period.

There was no penalty on the hit itself, however Phoenix defenseman Keith Yandle stepped in to fight MacKenzie.

In 39 games prior to Thursday, Ekman-Larsson had four goals and 22 points. Below is a video of the hit. At happens towards the bottom of the screen, at the Columbus blue line.
