Earlier on Sunday, it seemed like Semyon Varlamov would get a chance to rebound from an embarrassing start in which he allowed eight goals against the Edmonton Oilers. Instead, the Denver Post reports that Jean-Sebastien Giguere will face the Vancouver Canucks tonight.
Giguere, 36, improved his record to 7-0-0 in a victory against the Calgary Flames on Friday, which head coach Patrick Roy called “an important win.” He’s currently tied with Ken Dryden for 44th all-time in wins with 258, so Giguere’s aiming for history along with more reps this season.
The veteran netminder has been lights out so far in 2013-14, combining that sterling record with an outstanding .947 save percentage and 1.67 GAA. One could see this as a difficult situation for Varlamov, yet it’s difficult to blame Roy for going with the team’s other red-hot netminder.
