The Dallas Stars lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday, but it certainly wasn’t because of a lack of shots.

The Stars recorded 50 shots on Maple Leafs’ goalie Jonathan Bernier, but still came away with a 3-2 overtime loss when Toronto center Trevor Smith scored on a deflection with 42 seconds remaining in the extra frame.

Nazem Kadri scored twice for Toronto, so that was a nice contribution. But this was all about Jonathan Bernier. He was solid, outstanding, making 48 saves.

To give you an indication of how integral he was to the victory, the Leafs were outshot 50-24. On home ice, it should also be mentioned. The win, falling largely on the shoulders of Bernier, snaps a five-game losing streak.

“By no means, [do] we think we’re out of the woods, but it feels good to win a hockey game,” said Leafs head coach Randy Carlyle afterward, as per Jonas Siegel of TSN 1050.
