Report: NHL set to finally pay Gretzky at least $7M

The NHL will finally make Wayne Gretzky “whole.”

The hockey legend has been waiting years to be paid for his final season with the Phoenix Coyotes (somewhere between $7 million and $8 million), but that payment has been held up in legal matters between the league and former ‘Yotes owner Jerry Moyes. ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun and other sources report that the situation will be settled.

This is good news for more than just No. 99’s bank account.

There have been rumblings that the money owed has left the NHL and “The Great One” estranged. Maybe it will take some time to fully repair that relationship - though that has probably already started happening - but leagues are generally wise to treat their all-time greats kindly.

In other words, it’s a big relief, though Gretzky probably isn’t shedding tears about it.
