Video: Canucks, Sens engage in wild second period

WeiseBoro

Pretty crazy night in the Canadian capital.

After a first period in which John Tortorella blasted Jannik Hansen for a poor effort on Clarke MacArthur’s opening goal, the Canucks and Senators sparked major fireworks in an eventful second frame.

Vancouver scored four goals on its first eight shots of the period -- in less than nine minutes, no less -- chasing Ottawa starter Craig Anderson from the goal:

Then, in an effort to spark his struggling club, Sens forward Chris Neil tried to land a big hit on Vancouver defenseman Ryan Stanton... only to draw the ire of heavyweight Tom Sestito, who threw down in a very spirited scrap:

The four-goal outburst was fairly unexpected, as the Canucks have struggled on offense lately and mustered just three goals in consecutive losses to Chicago and L.A. But against Ottawa, things clicked -- Daniel Sedin started by scoring 31 seconds into the period, followed by David Booth at the 1:16 mark.

Defenseman Jason Garrison made it 3-1 with a power play goal at the 4:06 mark, and Dale Weise ended off Anderson’s night by scoring his second of the year at 9:22. Booth, Sedin and Garrison all finished with a goal and an assist during the outburst, a welcome development for Booth especially as he’s been a healthy scratch in recent games.

It’s worth noting that Mika Zibanejad cut the Vancouver lead to two with 1:02 left in the period.
