Datsyuk skips Sunday trip after elbow to head from Cowen

Disturbing news for the Detroit Red Wings: Pavel Datsyuk isn’t traveling with the team for Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Sabres after receiving this elbow from Ottawa Senators defenseman Jared Cowen on Saturday:

Red Wings GM Ken Holland provided some troubling comments about Datsyuk’s injury situation to MLive.com late Saturday, including describing Datsyuk as feeling “fuzzy.”

“We left him behind,’’ Holland said. “After the game he felt, I don’t know the word, but he wasn’t quite right. We’re going through the protocol, see how he feels in the next day or two.”

Cowen, 22, hasn’t been suspended in his brief NHL career (he’s played in 113 regular season and 17 postseason games). He didn’t receive a penalty on the play, puzzling Henrik Zetterberg.

“Obviously, the combined eight eyes out there didn’t see it,’’ Zetterberg said of the two referees and two linesmen. “And if you don’t see it you can’t call it.”

“He just had the puck, kind of strange no one saw a star player like that.”

(Imagines Zetterberg scratching his chin in false-confusion.)
