Varlamov excels again against Capitals

varlyinwashgetty

Semyon Varlamov’s life has become more turbulent since the first time he held the Washington Capitals to a single goal in a win for Colorado this season, but the results remained similar, as he helped the Avalanche beat his old team 5-1 on Sunday.

The 25-year-old improved his 2013-14 record to 9-2-0 with a .936 save percentage and even 2.00 GAA thanks to tonight’s work. Between this outing (33 out of 34) and Oct. 12’s performances, Varlamov has stopped 73 out of 75 Capitals shots this season.

Joel Ward was the only Capitals player who could beat Varlamov on Sunday (and he assisted on Eric Fehr’s tally a month ago). Meanwhile, Gabriel Landeskog (one goal, one assist) and Erik Johnson (two assists) enjoyed strong nights for Colorado.

The Avalanche continue their ridiculously hot start to the sason (14-2-0 for 28 points) while the Capitals are 9-8-1.
