Sharks’ Hertl named NHL Rookie of the Month

Tomas Hertl

After leading all first-year players in goals and points, it’s little surprise that Tomas Hertl has been named the NHL’s Rookie of the Month for October.

Hertl, who turns 20 on Nov. 12, scored eight goals and three assists in 13 games, including an epic four-goal effort against New York on Oct. 8, becoming the fourth-youngest player in NHL history to score four in a single game.

San Jose’s first-round pick (17th overall) at the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Hertl edged out the likes of Calgary’s Sean Monahan (10 points in 12 games), Edmonton’s Mark Arcobello (10 assists, leading all rookies) and Anaheim goalie Frederik Andersen (3-0-0, 1.50 GAA, .944 save percentage) for the monthly award.

Also in the running for October’s rookie award were Nashville defenseman Seth Jones (minutes leader among all first-year players) and Dallas’ Alex Chiasson (5G, 4A in 12 games).
