Blackhawks’ Nordstrom ‘kind of exploded inside’ after scoring first NHL goal

Joakim Nordstrom showed patience and nice finish, and it amounted to his first NHL goal.

Nordstrom, the 21-year-old rookie who was Chicago’s third-round pick, 90th overall, in the 2010 NHL Draft, scored his momentous goal in the first period of the Blackhawks’ 3-2 victory over the New York Islanders.

“I kind of exploded inside,” Nordstrom told CSN Chicago following the game. “It’s always nice to get the first goal. It felt good.”

The goal gave Chicago a 1-0 lead in what was a wild first period between the two teams. They combined for four goals in the opening 20 minutes.

Nordstrom was floating through the slot and then toward the New York net, when Niklas Hjalmarsson, below the net with the puck, spotted his teammate and fellow countryman from Sweden.

Hjalmarsson delivered a perfect pass and Nordstrom fired the puck to the back of the net.
