Flyers sign Gill: one year, $700,000

Hal Gill

The Philadelphia Flyers have officially come to terms with veteran defenseman Hal Gill, inking him to a one-year, $700,000 deal, according to TSN’s Bob McKenzie.

Gill, 38, played 32 games last season for the Predators and came to Flyers camp on a tryout. A defensive specialist, his addition will help a team that struggled in its own end last season.

“As a team we need to make sure everyone is on the same page, that there is a commitment to defense,” Gill said, per CSN Philly. “That is what we worked a lot on [Sunday] and you saw that in practice.

“Making clean plays, being responsible defensively. When you do that, your offense and creating offense comes off that.”

To fit Gill’s salary under the cap, the Flyers are expected to put Chris Pronger and Marc-Andre Bourdon on long-term injured reserve, and may explore the possibility of a trade.

One involving Andrej Meszaros has been kicked around lately, and it’s possible the club could revisit whispers of a Braydon Coburn deal from the summer.
