The Colorado Avalanche signed 2013’s first overall pick Nathan MacKinnon to a three-year, entry-level contract on Tuesday.

The 17-year-old forward reiterated that he hopes to make an immediate jump to the NHL during the 2013-14 season.

“The signing of this first NHL contract represents for me another step towards becoming a professional hockey player,” MacKinnon said. “I am excited and thrilled to have been drafted by the Avalanche, and I am already working very hard in order to be ready physically and mentally for training camp.”

MacKinnon represents the first top pick the franchise has made since moving to Colorado. The Quebec Nordiques made three straight No. 1 overall choices, however, picking Mats Sundin (1989), Owen Nolan (1990) and Eric Lindros (1991).

The Denver Post reports that MacKinnon is taking part in Colorado’s prospects camp this week.
