Weiss the Wing, signs five-year deal in Detrot

Stephen Weiss

The Detroit Red Wings have landed one of the top available centers on the free-agent market, signing Stephen Weiss to a five-year deal worth $24.5 million ($4.9 million cap hit).

Weiss, 30, leaves Florida -- the team that drafted him fourth overall in 2001 -- after scoring 394 points in 654 games with the Panthers.

In Detroit, he’ll join the likes of Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg, as well as Daniel Alfredsson, who shocked Ottawa fans today by leaving the Senators.

Weiss played just 17 games in 2013, scoring only once with three assists. A wrist injury that required surgery caused him to miss 26 games.

For the Panthers, Weiss becomes the latest free agent to depart Florida. Last summer, defenseman Jason Garrison left to sign in Vancouver.
