Report: NHL likely to abolish spin-o-ramas in shootouts

raymondspingetty

It looks like the shootout spin-o-rama might go extinct, which is great news for goalies who don’t like getting embarrassed. It’s also a boon for people who enjoy mocking the shootout and many of the league’s other rules, if Twitter reactions are any indication.

TSN’s Darren Dreger reports that the move will likely be made illegal in the shootout during the 2013-14 season, although that must be approved first. (He expects that to happen.)

While many find it entertaining, there are more than a few who aren’t on board, including Mike Milbury. He chastised it in early 2012:

That practice seemed to draw extra attention during the abbreviated 2013 season, including a moment when Kaspars Daugavins really riled people up with this unsuccessful attempt:

This is tough timing for pending free agent Mason Raymond, who was one of the most frequent (and successful) practitioners of the move:

Really, the thing people might miss the most about the move is when it failed spectacularly, as Raymond’s Vancouver Canucks teammate Alex Burrows humorously shows (starting at the 1:11 mark):

Again, satirists and plenty of hockey fans will miss this wacky diversion, but Dreger notes that the NHLPA is pushing the alteration.

As usual, Roberto Luongo provided the funniest take on the matter with these two Tweets.*

YESSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!“@DarrenDreger: Spin-o-rama in shootouts very likely an illegal play in NHL next season.”

Well, at least the fallout has been entertaining.
