Rangers’ Callahan, Hagelin undergo successful shoulder surgeries

On Friday, the New York Rangers announced that captain Ryan Callahan and forward Carl Hagelin both underwent torn labrum surgery in their left shoulders.

Both players participated in all 12 of New York’s playoff games, with Callahan averaging a whopping 23:22 of ice time per game -- the most among any NHL forward this postseason.

Hagelin averaged 18:06, almost a full minute more than he received during the regular season.

This is the second shoulder injury Hagelin’s suffered this season. Back in November, he was forced to leave Swedish second division outfit Sodertalje SSK and return to North America with a shoulder ailment.

Like Hagelin, Callahan also slogged through shoulder injuries this season. He missed three games with one back in late January/early February, and spent some time on injured reserve.

UPDATE: According to Blueshirts United, the Rangers expect “both players to require between four and five months to recover and be able to play hockey again.

“That time frame would put both players at or near the start of the 2013-14 regular season.”
