The top three North American prospects heading into the NHL Draft will compete for the Memorial Cup.
The Portland Winterhawks, with defenseman Seth Jones, the top-ranked North American skater, defeated the London Knights in the semifinal on Friday night, setting up the highly anticipated championship match-up with the Halifax Mooseheads.
The Mooseheads are led by Nathan MacKinnon and Jonathan Drouin, who are No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, in the final Central Scouting draft rankings.
According to an article in the Oregonian, it is the first time in 15 years the Winterhawks will in the final of the Memorial Cup.
“It’s pretty exciting,” Winterhawks’ head coach Travis Green told the Canadian Press.
“It was a tough game tonight. I thought London played extremely well, especially after playing four games in five nights. Very impressive team that we beat tonight. It was a hard-fought game.”
