Swedish/Canucks defenseman Alex Edler has been suspended for the rest of the IIHF World Championship for a knee-on-knee hit that injured Canadian/Hurricanes forward Eric Staal.
From the IIHF:
The disciplinary panel deemed Edler’s action as reckless, dangerous and that it was in disregard to the vulnerability of his opponent and for that he must be held accountable.
Sweden plays Finland tomorrow in Stockholm, with the winner advancing to the gold-medal game against either Switzerland or the United States.
Edler said today he had “no intention to hurt” Staal.
Staal will reportedly have an MRI Saturday morning in Raleigh. This video is no longer available. Click here to watch more NBC Sports videos!
