Veteran defenseman Tom Poti will not re-sign with the Capitals after spending the last five seasons in Washington, according to Stephen Whyno of the Washington Times.
“It’s time to move on,” Poti explained.
Poti played 16 regular season games for the Caps this year — registering two assists — returning to action after missing the entire 2011-12 campaign with a serious groin/pelvic injury.
As such, he was selected as Washington’s 2013 nominee for the Masterton Trophy.
The former Oiler, Ranger and Islander said he’d like to continue his playing career.
He turned 36 in June and could still be a useful asset in spot duty, perhaps as a power play specialist — Poti’s twice scored 40-plus points and notched 20 assists with Washington in 2009-10.
Poti was in the final season of a two-year, $5.75 million deal signed with the Caps in 2011.
