Handzus could be second-line solution in Chicago

Michal Handzus

All the Chicago Blackhawks had to surrender was a fourth-round draft pick to get veteran center Michal Handzus from San Jose on April 1.

On Wednesday, Handzus had three assists in Chicago’s 4-1 victory in Edmonton. The 36-year-old (whose career some considered “done”) may even end up centering the second line, between Patrick Kane and Patrick Sharp, on the NHL’s best team in the playoffs.

“I think last game we found out on the trial situation that Handzus played pretty good with those guys, and it gives us another option as we go along here,” 'Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said, per the Sun-Times. “Sometimes you find things out, sometimes it works over the short term, and sometimes hopefully it goes a little longer. On a need basis, guys take advantage of opportunities.”

In a related story, injured center Dave Bolland (groin) will reportedly not make the trip to St. Louis for the ‘Hawks’ final game of the season on Saturday.

Chicago hosts Calgary tonight.
