Glendale’s mayor has never even heard of this Darin Pastor fellow

Shane Doan

Late last week, Darin Pastor burst onto the scene (as much as you can “burst” onto this tedious scene) with a press release trumpeting his interest in acquiring the Phoenix Coyotes from the NHL and keeping the team in Glendale.

Pastor, founder and CEO of the wealth management firm Capstone Affluent Strategies, said he had “formed an exploratory committee of seasoned investment bankers and other related sports entertainment advisors in an effort” to buy the club.

“Hockey is in my DNA,” Pastor added. “My family has enjoyed a love affair with the sport for over three generations. When we saw the prospect to get involved with the NHL and purchase the Coyotes, it was like a dream come true.”

But according to the Arizona Republic, Pastor’s dream may be meeting with reality.

Pastor said he hoped to meet with Coyotes executives and tour Jobing.com Arena today. However, that meeting never materialized.

Team President Mike Nealy refered Pastor to NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, Coyotes spokesman Rich Nairn said. “There are no plans to meet with him at this time,” Nairn said.

Daly did not respond to messages left by the Republic.

Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers said late Monday that he had never spoken to Pastor and that he was unaware that Pastor had hoped to speak with him. “I don’t know who Darin Pastor is,” he said.

Despite the above, Pastor says his interest in the Coyotes is very real.

“We’ve been sort of sizing this up, framing how we can get it done, how we can get the financing in place, how we can make sure that we have enough capital to make sure we can make this thing work over a long period of time,” he said.

“We’ve not only done a great deal of due diligence on this, but we believe we can pull this off. If we didn’t, we wouldn’t bother,” he said.

Alberta investment banker George Gosbee is also reportedly exploring a purchase of the Coyotes with the intention of keeping them in the desert.

Update:

According to KCD Public Relations -- Pastor’s PR firm out of San Diego -- Pastor is in Phoenix for tonight’s Coyotes-Kings game, and will meet Mayor Weiers on Wednesday afternoon.
