Niemi makes Sharks history with back-to-back shutouts

Antti Niemi

No goalie in the history of the San Jose Sharks had registered a shutout one night, then done it again the very next night.

Antti Niemi changed that on Wednesday and Thursday, blanking the Ducks and Red Wings, respectively.

More importantly, Niemi helped the Sharks get a bit more comfortable in the standings. San Jose now sits seventh in the Western Conference, four points up on ninth-place Nashville.

“I felt good after [Wednesday] night,” Niemi said after stopping all 27 Detroit shots, per CSNBayArea.com. “I thought I was able to be real patient today, wait for pucks, and then react. I wasn’t cheating or expecting anything else, I was just reading the play. That’s a confidence thing, for sure.”

With four wins in five games, San Jose appears to have turned its season around. The Sharks had just five wins in their previous 21 games -- a slump that, by the way, came after a perfect 7-0-0 start.

San Jose hosts Phoenix Saturday.
